Bridal Veil Falls in the Winter
Hello fellow wanderers and a Happy New Year to you all! Here’s to many new adventures in the new year! We’re back from our break and ready to roll out some new material. If you haven’t checked out last week’s post, do us a favour and let us know in the comments what you’d like to read about in the coming year. With that, let’s get on with today’s post...
We’ve been having a cold “snap” for what seems to be two weeks now. Minus 30 degree weather is not conducive to an overabundance of outdoor activities. I personally just want to burrito myself in several (approx. 12) blankets next to a fire and read a book or chat with friends over coffee (which will primarily be used to warm my hands and face, caffeinating and drinking being secondary and tertiary purposes). I definitely do NOT want go outside, which is unfortunately impossible when you have do silly things like get to work or do groceries.
Still, the cold weather brings with it a few good things. Lakes, amongst other things, freeze over so we can skate and snowmobile on them. Of these “other things” that freeze over is Bridal Veil Falls, another of Manitoulin Island’s not-so hidden gems. What sets it apart from others is that it offers something unique in both warm and cold weather.
The falls are located near Kagawong, approximately half an hour’s drive down Highway 540 from Little Current.
In the summer, the falls are a popular spot for swimming, fishing, picnicking. It’s so popular, Kyla’s already talked about all the summer fun you can have here in her post Only on the Island.

Swimming is all well and good but when winter rolls around and temperatures drop below zero while heaps of snow drop from the sky, it becomes a bit more… ah... difficult. Which is why the falls are so cool. In the winter, they freeze over completely creating a massive wall of ice. Magnificent a f. The kicker? You can actually walk behind them! (Any game of thrones fans? If you squint a little you can live out your fantasy of walking along the Wall, ya loveable nerds.)
Ice, ice, baby! Bridal Veil Falls in the Winter.

It’s a fun and easy adventure for all ages and most skill levels. From the parking lot, or you may need to park on the side of the road in the winter, it’s just a short walk down a path, a (potentially treacherous) metal staircase, and you’re there! Do wear a pair of boots with good grip. I was not prepared with adequate footwear and had to get a friend to haul me up the side of a hip-height chunk of slippery ice in a somewhat undignified manner to get behind the falls. Watch out for thin patches of ice above the water - you won’t drown in the shallow water but you might get a very unpleasant boot full of icy water!

Bonus tip: Embrace your Canadian spirit on the way out and stop at 3 Cows and a Cone for some ice cream.
Came for the falls, stayed for the ice cream.
